Four Mistakes You Might Be Making with Your Dentures

Posted on 7/15/2016 by Sergio Ortegon
A glass jar with a pair of dentures floating in it.Do you think that you know all there is to know about properly caring for your dentures? Many denture wearers are actually making some pretty common mistakes when it comes to caring for and living with their appliance. By identifying some of the most likely mistakes, you can make sure you are avoiding them in the future.

Cleaning Dentures Over the Sink

When you clean your dentures, do you scrub them over an empty sink? This can put your dentures at risk if you accidently drop them. While your dentures are made to be durable in your mouth, a fall into the sink could cause them to break or crack.

Believing that Your Dentures Won't Stain

Now that you have false teeth, you don't have to worry about your dentures staining, right? Unfortunately, even though you no longer have your real teeth, certain foods and drinks can still stain them. Try to limited your consumption of coffee, red wine, and berries to prevent potential stains.

Thinking You Don't Have to Brush

Your teeth aren't real anymore, so there is no reason to continue to brush them. That is what many people believe, but it simply isn't true. You'll still need to take good care of your dental hygiene by brushing your dentures along with your gums and tongue using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Storing Your Dentures in Hot Water

If you are keeping your dentures moist, you are taking a big step in preventing damage. However, you shouldn't be keeping them in piping hot water. If the water is too hot, it can actually cause warping, so your appliance may no longer fit correctly in your mouth. Instead, choose lukewarm water.
