Is Dental Amalgam Made of Mercury?

Posted on 8/25/2016 by Sergio Ortegon
A diagram of how a dental filling works.Every once in a while everyone seems to get all worked up about mercury in amalgam fillings. We are here to separate fact from fiction. Yes, there is mercury in amalgam fillings. There is no danger to those who have amalgam fillings.

Should I be Worried?

There have been a decent amount of studies done on this subject and all signs point to - don't worry about it. The mercury that exists in the amalgam in your teeth is set in an inter-metallic chemical compound. This means that it is mixed with other metals, such as silver and copper.

This is an important distinction because there are plenty of elements that are dangerous alone but safe when bonded with others.

Take table salt, for example. Sodium chloride (table salt) is a mixture of - you guessed it, sodium and chloride. Individually, both sodium and chloride are poisons to humans. Together, sodium and chloride are delicious and safe. Same concept with mercury in amalgam fillings. Because amalgam is an amalgamation of several different metals.

Dental Amalgam is Safe?

Yes. We do receive a small measure of amalgam-derived mercury from our fillings but it's a very small amount. We do mean small. Your body typically absorbs 1 to 3 micrograms of mercury per day due to fillings.

To put that in perspective, our body absorbs 5 to 10 times that amount of mercury from the food we eat every day. So, while we do absorb a very small amount of mercury from our fillings, it's nothing compared to what we are totally used to.

No True Direct Filling Substitute Exists

Amalgam provides one of the lowest maintenance, most dependable, longest lasting, solutions to dental fillings. Composite (tooth colored) fillings are great, but fail at twice the rate in half the time of a similar amalgam filling.
