Determining Which is Better, Fillings or Crowns

Are you in a situation where you need either a dental crown or a filling, but you don't know which one you should choose? There are a few things you can do to decide which of these is best for you.

There are a few pros and cons of each one. Either way, you will still need to see us get one of these done for you. Here are a few ways you can choose whether a dental crown or a filling is best for you.

Does The Tooth Need Strengthening?

First, before choosing between the two, you will need to determine whether or not your tooth needs strengthening or not. If your tooth needs strengthening up, a dental crown offers this for you better than a filling does. A filling doesn't provide as much protection to your teeth either as a dental crown does.

How Big is the Repair That is Needed?

Although a dental crown is better for strengthening the tooth, it will also depend on the size of the repair that is required. If it is a small cavity that you have in your tooth, you just need a filling done.

Another reason why a filling might win out over a crown is that the tooth will need to be trimmed for a dental crown and cutting the tooth can cause some stress to it.

The bottom line is that fillings can be left for minor repairs such as cavities while crowns should be used for larger repairs of the tooth since they can strengthen the tooth.

As always, you should speak with us before deciding between the two, so we can give you a clear picture of the two choices you do have. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (832) 968-9108 today.
