Could Your Dentures Break if You Do Not Care for Them Properly?

The straight answer is yes, they absolutely can. Dentures can last up to 8 years, but bad and improper handling can lead your dentures to last only three years, and sometimes even lesser than that. Dentures are made in part of acrylic resin and some metal, which can actually degrade over time.

Eating acidic foods can weaken the acrylic resin, and the changing temperature of the mouth from hot to cold can degrade the plastic covering, and can be very uncomfortable for you.

This discomfort can also lead you to move the dentures, which will also speed up the process of degradation. This cycle repeats itself day in and day out, and after some time has passed, you will find out that your dentures have cracks already.

What Should I Do to Prevent My Dentures from Breaking Down?

It is best to treat your dentures like your new teeth. Treat them with care in a proper manner. For one, take out your dentures before you hit the sack and sleep. Put them in a spot where it is lukewarm, and if possible with the same temperature as your mouth. If the metal parts can be seen, then put them in a glass or bowl of warm water.

Whenever you brush your teeth, and when you take out those dentures, rinse your mouth to protect not only the teeth but also the gums. Any bacteria can weaken the dentures, and having great oral hygiene will ensure that your dentures will last a long time.

Also use denture cleaners to take care of your dentures. Toothpaste may be abrasive on your dentures, and can have a negative impact instead.

If you are having some issues with your dental health, talk to a specialist to make sure that you get the best advice possible. Come schedule an appointment with us, and let us make sure that your denture lasts as long as they should.
