What Exactly is Dental Bonding Used For?

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Sergio Ortegon
What Exactly is Dental Bonding Used For?Dental bonding is used for several different things, whitening teeth, lightly repairing teeth and filling in spaces are most common.

Today we'll explore how our office can help you present your best smile to the world with the help of dental bonding. Let's look at the different ways it can improve your smile and your overall dental health.

What is Dental Bonding?

Tooth bonding is a procedure that we do in our office, usually just a single visit, and it's relatively pain free. We apply a tooth colored resin material to your tooth using adhesives and a high intensity curing light.

Typically, it's used for cosmetic purposes like improving the appearance of discolored teeth, filling in chips or cracks. It can also be used to lengthen teeth, change the shape of teeth and even close the spaces between teeth.

In addition to cosmetic application, it can be used in the repair of damaged and decayed teeth. Chipped teeth are at a higher risk for decay and discoloration. Applying the resin to the teeth not only improves the appearance of a chipped or damaged tooth, but it can help protect the tooth from further damage and decay.

Dental bonding takes very little preparation and usually no anesthesia unless the bonding is being used to fill a decaying tooth. We take the time to match the resin to the color of your existing teeth so that they will all match. After the tooth is prepared by roughening up the surface of the tooth using an acidic gel, then we apply the liquid bonding agent to the tooth.

The tooth colored resin that we've prepared for you is then applied to the adhesive and shaped and molded and smoothed until it's the desired shape. Then we polish it to match your other teeth and the material is hardened with ultraviolet curing light.
